Description:

Drawing in pencil with watercolor on paper in a naive realistic style of a man sitting at a table, looking in the face with a long stemmed Gouda pipe with an oval bowl and spark arrester in the right hand, a sealed letter in front of the chest in the left hand. Dressed in gray cardigan with a signet over which a long blue jacket. Chair back and table top painted red, on the table a tub-shaped tobacco jar, spittoon and brazier. The rear wall has gray paneling. Gouache backside with ink "MAARTEN BAKKER KROMMENIE". Original oak frame veneered with mahogany.

Comments
Maarten Bakker, geboren Krommenie 22-12-1777, zoon van Nan Jansz. Bakker en Jannetje Maarten Rol, huwt Geertruij Haverkorn, beroep rolreder (zeildoekenfabrikant), vader van zes kinderen, woonde in wat nu heet de Zuiderhoofdstraat, sterft vermoedelijk elders.
