Description:

Tobacco pipe made of clay with figural bowl, flat base without heel and up going figural stem with stub. Bowl in caricature bust of Duke of Wellington with two-sided stitch showing a plume of drooping feathers and bust with a uniform with épaulettes and embroidered galons. Stem a soldier, whose cap with flap forms the stub, which makes a disapproving gesture to Wellington with his hand. Original rosewood stem with ivory ring and buffalo horn mouthpiece.

Deze satirische pijp is gemaakt vanaf 1845 op verzoek van de Londense pijpenimporteur Benda naar aanleiding van het verbod van Wellington dat soldaten in het leger mogen roken.
Getoond in de film Comical Pipes door British Pathé, 1960 uit de Shillitoe collection.
